Description:
  1. The Navy Presidential Unit Citation was authorized by Executive Order 9050. 
  2. Awarded in the name of the President of the United States to units of the Armed Forces of the United States and cobelligerent nations for extraordinary heroism in action against an armed enemy occurring on, or after, October 16, 1941, for U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine Corps units. The unit must have displayed such gallantry, determination, and esprit de corps in accomplishing its mission under extremely difficult and hazardous conditions to have set it apart and above other units participating in the same campaign. The degree of heroism required is the same as that which would be required for award of a Distinguished Service Cross to an individual. 
  3. NOTE: Attaching Devices authorized by individual services: 
  • 1. Blue Star - denoted additional awards. This is now OBSOLETE 
  • 2. Bronze Globe - denotes service aboard USS Triton (SSN571) during the 1st submerged cruise around the world for the period July 22, 1958 to August 5, 1958. 
  • 3. Gold "N" - denotes service aboard the USS Nautilus (SSR(N) 586) during the 1st cruise under the polar ice cap for the period February 16, 1960 to May 10, 1960.
